5 Tips for Preparing Your Lawn for the Spring

Spring Lawn Prep in Peekskill NY

Spring is one of the most important times to perform maintenance to your lawn. By following these 5 steps you can help prevent your beautiful lawn from being overtaken with weeds, stressed by drought, and heat.

  1. Remove any debris that has accumulated. This is a perfect time to also rake up any matted areas of the lawn, which can harbor Snow Mold. Raking these areas and removing debris will encourage better air flow throughout the turf grass and prevent any disease and insect infestation. It will also allow new grass blades to grow without struggle.
  2. Applying a pre-emergent crabgrass control in early spring is very important! Timing is critical as it must be applied prior to the soil temperatures reaching 55-60 degrees. After this point the weed seeds will have begun to germinate and the pre-emergent will no longer be effective. An important thing to note is that crabgrass is very difficult to get rid of once it has germinated.
  3. Fertilizing in the spring jump starts your lawn from its winter slumber. It provides a nutrient build up that will give it the strength to withstand heat stress and drought through the summer months.
  4. Core aeration is a great thing to do to your lawn in the spring. It is important, because it allows water and air to reach the root zone faster. Resulting in new growth and increased root development. In the spring however it is important to core aerate before the soil temperature reaches that 55-60 degrees, because after this point the voids created in the lawn will only be an invitation to aggressive weeds seeds.
  5. Winter can wreak some havoc on our lawns and come spring there may be some repairs needed to areas damaged by salt and snow plows. If weather permits spring can be a great time to reseed any damaged turf areas, however if you are applying a pre-emergent weed control there is care to be taken. The pre-emergent weed control is non-selective, so it will prevent any seed from germinating. We recommend that if the weather permits, hold off the crabgrass control to the latest point possible. Then perform the turf repairs needed as early as possible so that the seeds have enough time to germinate and somewhat establish prior to the pre-emergent being applied. If this is not possible, don’t skip the pre-emergent weed control. It is better to wait until fall to perform any turf repairs.

Tree Cutting Techniques

tree cutting techniquesCutting down a tree, especially a mature one in Westchester County, is not as easy as taking an axe and start chopping. It takes precision and the right equipment. Most of all, it can be dangerous. For this reason, it should be done by properly-trained and equipped professionals in Westchester County, as well as Cortlandt Manor NY, Croton on Hudson NY, Briarcliff Manor NY, Chappaqua NY, Ossining NY, Peekskill NY, or Yorktown Heights NY. If you do try to cut the tree yourself, here are some tree cutting techniques that can go a long way.

Tips for proper tree removal

Before doing this venture, you MUST have the proper equipment. We can’t preface this enough! The equipment should be good condition and be tested. Here are the main pieces of equipment:

Chainsaw

This is perhaps the most important piece of equipment you’ll need. The chainsaw should have about 3.5 horsepower and it should have a 20 inch bar. The bar length indicates the depth that the blade can penetrate, so 20 inches should be enough to cut down most trees.

Safety Glasses

Many people overlook the importance of using safety glasses when doing work like this. However, the truth is that flying debris can seriously harm your eyes when cutting with a chainsaw.

Leg Protection

If you hit a knot in the tree, then the saw can kick out of the tree and hit you in the leg. It is recommended that you use either knee-high safety boots or wear heavy leg protectors.

1000 LB Test Rope

The rope should be roughly three times longer than your tree is high. It will be used as a safety backup in case there is an issue.

Tree Cutting Techniques

After having the proper equipment, make sure you have friends available to assist. You definitely do not want to cut the tree only to have it fall on your house, fence, or on a neighbor’s property! Once you are ready to go, you can start following these tree cutting techniques to safely cut down your tree.

  • Determine how tall the tree is.
  • Based on the height of the tree, decide on the direction you want the tree to fall.
  • Clear the area in the fall-zone from any debris or anything that could be damaged.
  • Tie one end of the rope to the tree at either the middle or above the middle.
  • Hand the other end off to your friends and have them stand outside of the fall-zone at a safe distance.
  • Cut a v-shaped notch into the tree on the side you want the tree to fall.
  • The notch should be at roughly knee-height, should cut to the center of the tree and should look like a shallow “V”.
  • Move to the other side of the tree and start slowly cutting into the tree until you meet your notch cut.
  • When the tree starts to fall, quickly walk away from the tree at a 45-degree angle.
  • If the tree doesn’t fall over all the way or gets caught on another tree, have your friends start pulling on the rope until the tree finally falls.

We highly recommend hiring an expert tree cutting service or arborist to cut your tree for you. The professionals at Friendly Lawn Care in Westchester County can assess your property and give a diagnosis of any tree on your property that needs attention.

Recommended Approach To Landscape Lighting

landscape lighting benefitsWhile it may seem like landscape lighting in Westchester County, including Croton on Hudson NY, Peekskill NY, Ossining NY, Yorktown Heights NY, Cortlandt Manor, and Chappaqua NY, could be a do-it-yourself job. Yet, keep in mind that attempting a more in-depth approach to landscape lighting usually involves an expert who knows the ins and outs of landscape lighting in Westchester County. When it comes to such a project, Friendly Lawn Care is your go-to expert.

Our expert staff knows that you don’t try to light your entire property at one time. Instead, separate your property into regions or zones. Typical zones might be an entrance path, island garden bed, or backyard patio. Focus on just one zone and aim to illuminate it with all the goals in mind. Don’t start the second zone till you finish the first. Hiring an experienced  landscape lighting designer, such as our staff at Friendly Lawn Care is the best way to achieve expert level landscape lighting  that makes your Westchester County property safe, beautiful, and meets all of your needs.

The Recommended Approach of Landscape Lighting

  • Selectively illuminate objects of interest and beauty
  • Create new shapes and patterns through the interplay of light and shadow.

Landscape Lighting Benefits

  • Safety: Illumination that ensures safe navigation throughout the property
  • Security: Illumination that deters, detects, identifies, and enables apprehension of intruders.
  • Beauty: Illumination that evokes positive aesthetic and emotional responses.
  • Functionality: Illumination that provides appropriate lighting for activities performed on the property.
  • Economy: Illumination that conserves financial and energy resources.
  • Environment: Illumination that minimizes light pollution and light trespass.

Satisfying all these goals may seem overwhelming. Still, there’s nothing wrong with taking a simple approach and to focus on one goal at a time to see landscape lighting benefits. For example, you may decide to light the pathway leading to your front door. Your main goal is probably ‘safety’ since you want the illumination to reveal the edges of the path and any irregularities that could cause tripping. Secondarily, you want ‘beauty’. In this case, to satisfy safety and beauty is straightforward. A professional team can help you select path lights that have a good wide coverage. In fact, without knowing it, you may be satisfying all or most of the other goals without even trying.

At Friendly Lawn Care, we spend many years mastering various techniques to produce beautiful and effective designs for our clients in Westchester County to  “see” the many landscape lighting benefits. Even though you love doing everything yourself, if you have the resources, hiring the pro is the surest way to end up with a great lighting design.

Tree Removal Near Peekskill

Need tree removal in Peekskill? Trees root into the earth, but that doesn’t mean they are impossible to remove from the ground or to transport to a new spot in your yard. You love your trees, but sometimes they’re better suited for locations elsewhere or need to be removed altogether. Perhaps they’ve out-grown the space in which they’re rooted, or, maybe you plan to move somewhere new but wish to bring that special tree along with you. Whatever your reason for needing Peekskill tree removal, let Friendly Lawn Care assist you!

Regardless of the tree you’re moving and the space to which you plant transport it, there are several guidelines to follow for the safe and proper transplanting of trees, and Friendly Lawn Care knows them all, as well as a variety of other quality lawn services.

There and good and not-so-good times of the year to remove trees. The best time to remove or transplant a tree is when it’s dormant and the ground conditions are ‘just right. These conditions typically occur in spring and fall, before frost develops in the soil. You just don’t want to remove or transplant a tree when its canopy is fully expressed.

If you remove or transplant a tree during winter, when frost resides in the soil, you risk root damage once the frost thaws and creates air pockets. This can cause settling, which induces leaning of the tree’s structure.

Another thing to consider when it comes to tree removal in Peekskill is the potential height and size of the tree and the location of home foundations, power lines and underground utilities all affect the transplanting location.

Your Peekskill tree removal company needs to identify the tree species first. There are a lot of different variables involved when it comes to tree removal in Peekskill.

There isn’t a big difference between removing or transplanting mature trees vs. young trees. The vigorous growth rate and easily manageable root ball of a young tree make its removal or transplanting process fairly easy.

Some tree species are simply easier to remove than others. Specifically red maples have much more fibrous root systems of which you can capture more when digging. Despite this, most trees will move well.

There are also times when tree removal is simply not recommended.

Several steps are involved for successful tree transplanting:

a. Ensure the time and budget required to remove a tree in a careful, timely manner is available.
b. Once the tree is uprooted, tie up the crown as much as possible to reduce limb breakage during the removal. This will aid in the cleanup.
c. Wrap the tree in a tarp to reduce wind damage moisture loss.
d. Follow up with proper tree care and inspections for insect damage.

When it comes to maintaining your lawn, trust the professional landscapers at Friendly Lawn Care! We will handle your tree removal with the utmost of professionalism and care. Call us today at: 914-737-0862 or visit our contact page if you need Peekskill tree removal or for any of your other lawn care needs.

Commercial Landscaping Near Ossining

There are many factors that must be considered when it comes to commercial landscaping near Ossining. Recently, our expert landscapers here at Friendly Lawn Care have been noticing the abundance of nice properties without fresh mulch installed yet. These properties should typically be mulched in the early spring, but this year there seems to be a delay.

Of course, there could be any number of explanations. Did the property manager sit on the mulch quote until last week? Did the account manager forget to include mulch in the seasonal agreement? Was mulch removed intentionally to save money?

In many situations, the mulch delay is caused by a labor shortage. The account manager quoted the mulch. The property manager approved the mulch. There just isn’t enough labor available to get the mulch down in a reasonable time period, even with mulch blowers. The mulch is sitting in the yard, waiting to be installed. The problem is it’s now December. Savvy customers will begin asking for discounts since the season is pretty much over, and disappointment may linger all the way into renewal season.

Scarcity inspires innovation. There are many reasons why the labor pool is shrinking as a percentage of the workforce, beyond the control of any single company. Realizing this fact, proactive commercial landscaping near Ossining means landscaping contractors, such as Friendly Lawn Care, are taking intentional steps to correct the shortfalls of summer in such a way that they don’t affect the following renewal season (this is one of the reasons to seek out a skilled and knowledgeable company before committing to commercial landscaping near Ossining, to avoid problems like this). We know the competition for talent is fierce and that the only way we’ll attract the best people is to roll up our sleeves and tackle this dilemma head on. We take pride in hiring only the very best landscapers to work on our residential and commercial landscaping near Ossining jobs so when you call Friendly Lawn Care, you can be sure that your property is in excellent hands!
